You can customize the way eZ publish handles errors to fit your specific needs. From version 3.2 (svn release 2957) you can use settings/error.ini to decide wether to show the error to the user, or to redirect to another page. Each error number can be configured independently.
You can also configure which error numbers that will trigger a 404 Not Found error.
