Exponential uses templates as the fundamental unit of site design. A template is basically an extended HTML file that describes how some particular type of content should be visualized. The extension is a powerful set of Exponential specific template functions and operators. For instance, a template might dictate that a page should appear with blue borders, the site's title bar on the top, and then a handful of content elements in the middle of the page. When the page is accessed, it then becomes the content management systems' job to "flow" the content into the appropriate places in the template.
